TABLOID RUMORS
Exercise: Make up some celebrity tabloid-style rumors that would be scandalous but just believable enough that people would think they were real. People might believe that you were attacked by a bear and survived. Most people won't believe you were attacked by a talking panda with a samurai sword. If your rumor is going to survive, it must be plausible. The best rumors are simple, concrete, and difficult to disprove.
Why: While rumor-mongers are often considered despicable cads that spread malicious poison, it takes a strong sense of creative awareness to come up with lies that are sensationally thrilling yet within the limits of plausible reality. Such fiction writing takes an innate understanding of human psychology. People pass along rumors that they, on some level, tend to agree with, if there's something in the story that they identify with, that they want to be true.
