FICTIONAL AFFLICTIONS

Exercise: You are a hypochondriac! Unmatched in paranoia. Of the 100,000 known diseases globally and countless other physical ailments, you still feel the need to make a new one up every time you feel a twinge or a tickle. Ponder the following list of ailments. Then, for each, come up with symptoms, causes, and home remedies, and explain the type of people most commonly affected by each fictional affliction.

Why: Filling out the larger context of something based on name alone – whether it’s a product, character, or even an illness! – triggers intuitive inspiration and storytelling skills. With just a tiny bundle of evocative words as your jumping-off point, you’ll need to create an entire narrative surrounding each affliction. This exercise requires you to rely on your associations with the words, experiences with the human body, and creative imagination.

Enhances Creative Imagination which includes divergent thinking, brainstorming, removing barriers, and combining ideas without rules or judgments.
