Subconscious Storytelling

Exercise:

Examine the inkblot and describe what you see. It can be as simple as a word or phrase (a toaster, a thirsty anteater, my parents fighting) or even a short scene (“two snowmen humping on a roller coaster”). Whatever your initial visual impression is, just jot it down and share your thoughts on the narrative in a sentence or two about what the inkblot represents.

Why:

Better known as a Rorschach Test, inkblot interpretation is a well-known method for tapping into the subconscious. Simply put, our minds will work to impose meaning on an ambiguous image. The meaning our mind decides to apply can reveal a lot about our past, fears, motives, desires, personalities, worldviews, and/or what we had for lunch.

In this case, we’re using the famous projective activity to mine material for creative generation: putting scoops of your subconscious to work on what’s sure to be an utterly unique narrative.
