SANITY CHECK
Exercise: In mix-up fit for an 80s comedy, you’ve been thrown in the loony bin instead of your nutty doppelganger who lives down the street. Yikes! Time to plead your case to the powers-that-be. Offer five reasons that you’re totally not insane. Point to actual facts about your life and behavior. Then, just for fun, jot down five reasons you might be insane after all! Try this on Friends.
“sanity is a cozy lie.” - Susan Sontag
Why: Any attempt at persuasion (especially when the stakes are high) really puts creative focus to the test. You need to combine imagination with astute cultural and contextual analysis in order to determine the kinds of things the other party is looking to hear. And, in this case, since you’re presenting truths about yourself, there’s a hefty dose of self-analysis at work as well.
Enhances Creative Focus which includes deep thinking, focus, pattern recognition, and creative problem-solving.
Example:
Reasons I’m not insane...
I’ve never owned snakes or spiders.
I always signal when I turn.
I don’t live in Florida.
I have no idea what “keto” is.
I separate lights and darks in the laundry.
Reasons I might be...
I butter my pizza.
I have a haunted garbage can.
I own multiple VCRs.
