A Creative Imagination Exercise

Cinematic Synopsis

Exercise: You’re interning at a B-movie archive. Your boss hands you a stack of dusty film canisters and tells you to watch each movie and summarize it. But you’ve got better things to do! Plus, he’s kind of a douche. So you decide to speed things up. Going by just the title alone, write a synopsis for one or two of these movie titles below. Try to stretch your imagination by using a range of genres. (Bonus! These are real movies, so feel free to look them up and see how they compare to your responses.)

Why?: Learning to trust the impulses of free association is like building a launching pad for the imagination. But in this case, you’ll also be going a step further by activating your personal trove of collected narratives – movies watched, books read, stories heard – in order to craft brief tales of your own.

Enhances Creative Imagination which includes divergent thinking, and creating new ideas without rules or judgments.

EXAMPLE:

Movie Name: The Whistler

Genre: Comedy

Synopsis: Dale Moore can whistle like a songbird, though it’s a gift he’s always been too shy to share. But when his wife runs off with his business partner, he’s in danger of losing his fried pickle truck to the bank. So Dale finally gets up the nerve to drive cross-country to the National Whistling Championship in hopes of winning prize money to save his business. With the help of his whistling and delicious fried pickles, Dale makes new friends along the way – and finds the courage share his song with the world.
