Exercise: Look at the seemingly absurd signs on the next page and write the meaning for each. These signs don’t have a standard, known purpose, but they do have the potential to express persuasive, meaningful warnings, or instructions. Even if it’s preposterous, use defensible logic to your explanation of the sign’s meaning.
Why: The act of thinking through absurdity activates the creative right brain. Though farce and absurdity are a relatively new tool in the timeline of creative humankind, they’ve made a powerful, indelible mark on the arts in the last couple of centuries. From Steve Martin to Andy Warhol, Absurdism taps into a primal, childlike openness, where rule-breaking and free association yield delightful and provocative results from a creative imagination.
