SCENT MEMORY
Exercise: Walk around your home and find some of these common scents. Then, close your eyes and smell them individually for a couple seconds. Keep your eyes closed for 15-30 seconds after you smell and write the memories that flow into your mind. Scent is an excellent vehicle to create visual triggers of events in the past.
“If you’re lacking in creative ideas, go smell something” -Oscar Herman
Why: The sense of smell links to our memories, emotions, and life events. Smells can evoke particular memories for your creative brain to reflect on. Everything from citrus, lavender, and mint, to diesel at the gas station and the smell of winter, provides a backdrop to life. This sense memory exercise is a great technique when stuck, and you need to tap into creative reflection for character development.
Enhances Creative Reflection which includes empathy, creative mindfulness, distant memory recall, and self-discovery.
