Exercise: Hollywood’s calling again. This time they want you to make a sitcom about your life. It can be about you or someone you know. All they need from you is the Show’s Name, a brief description, its slogan and your catchphrase. Write the name and slogan of the sitcom based on your life and the repeated catchphrase of your character.
Why: Sitcoms define characters and worlds in an exaggerated, colorful, yet condensed manner. The quirks and qualities of the character are drawn broadly and shown explicitly, which enables the viewer to laugh at the use and manipulation of different archetypes. By using your own life as the basis for these sitcom elements, you sharpen your skills at distilling the facts and self-perception of your own life into their most essential, which adds up to a revealing exercise in creative reflection.
