VERTICAL POEMS
Exercise: In this exercise we’ll use a “spine” word as the launching pad for your vertical poetry by writing words across starting each letter of the word. This is known as Acrostic poetry. It does not have to relate directly to what you are writing about, but it can. You can play with acoustics, explain what the word means to you, or describe how you see fit.
Why: Poetry, as opposed to prose, is writing with almost no format constraints. It’s like an abstract painting with words. Yet, poetry not only helps the mind with creative, artistic thinking, it even helps with more technical endeavors. According to BioScience Magazine, “creativity- more specifically, poetry- helps scientists to communicate their work in compelling ways. It increases engagement and enhances learning.” Using word triggers to build poems, helps hone your creative focus.
Enhances Creative Focus which includes deep thinking, focus, pattern recognition, and creative problem-solving.
