A Creative Imagination Exercise
COMIC COMPOUNDS
Exercise: Science does it again! Researchers in the UK established a method that helped them discover the 12 funniest words in the English language. But you know what’s funnier than a single silly word? Two mashed together! Pluck a word from the researchers’ list of funniest words and combine it with a word from one of the three other categories to make a new, ridiculous term. Then, define it. Then, repeat.
Why?: Creativity often demands breaking established rules to make something truly unique. This is why children are so creative. They color outside the lines, play in the mud, and are notorious word-maker uppers. As journalist and children's author Nicola Skinner notes, "Words are children's verbal Play-Doh, and the more words get smashed, pounded, rolled around and get glitter, peas, and sticks stuck to them, the better."
Enhances Creative Imagination which includes thinking of new ideas or concepts without rules or judgments.
Example:
Word: DingoTinkle
Definition: Urination while moving at high speeds, most often in a motorized vehicle or while skydiving.
Word: AssJack
Definition: A sudden bolt of inspiration that propels you from the couch and back into a long-dormant project, such as finishing a macaroni sculpture of Bill Clinton.
Choose one of the 12 funniest words -combine it with a Tool, food, or Animal to make a completely new word - define it!
